100% Buray silk handwoven, dyed, and finished in Norbulingka workshops.

Known as bu-ray (insect cloth) in Bhutan and Tibet and as Endi in India, this rugged wild silk fabric is made from the pierced cocoon of the Attacus Ricini moth whose larvae feed on the leaves of the castor oil tree, in the jungles of Assam. Popular in Bhutan and Tibet, buray was imported from Assam for centuries and traditionally used for monk’s shawls and the famed Tibetan shirt. Because the silk is harvested after the worm has emerged, it is considered a ‘non violent’ silk.

Buray combines the warmth of wool and the softness of silk. An everlasting fabric, it ages with grace and comfort, developing a sheen and supple drape that molds to the body.
